Hello,

I never realized that I would have so much work to do when I rented this quaint 88-year old cottage that is listed on a historical registry. The place has a lot of character, but has suffered some neglect.

With the summer heat we have been having, a mildew smell in two rooms has drawn my attention.

The living room has wall to wall carpet and it is a dark room with not great ventilation. Only one window. It also has wood paneling on the walls, and the ceiling panels are made of an old fashioned plywood called beaverboard. There is water damage on two areas of the ceiling and one panel even looks like it might cave in one day while I am there. I know this is a job for the landlord, but meanwhile I have to do something about the smell. I have read about various carpet cleaning things to try. baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice. etc. For the walls and ceiling I would like to wipe them down with something too. What do you suggest? I dont want to harm the color of the wood paneling.

The other room is a walk-in closet where I keep my clothes. When I go to work, I always feel I have a mildew smell on them. I did a home mold test in the closet and some mold grew in the petre dish, but not anything out of the ordinary, say if you left a uncleaned beer bottle out by the sink for a week, after 5 days I saw similar growth.
google_ad_width = 250;
google_ad_height = 250;

google_color_border = "ffffff";
google_color_bg = "ffffff";
google_color_link = "000000";
google_color_text = "000000";

google_color_url = "000000";
//-->

I also have some mold growing on the rubber edge of the fridgerator doors. I figure bleach solution will do that.

This isnt a perfect place to live by any means. Some of this, or all of this, the landlord should take care of. But I can spend a weekend cleaning and see where things stand after that. I want to get the musty smell out of the room.

What are your suggestions?

thanks much

we are having similar issues with a house we just bought.
First day after closing, we noticed alot of humidity in the basement…now we smell the den through out the house. We are tring to figure out how to get the smell out of the carpets, but the walls we washed them down with lysol and let it air dry. The basement is much better now, if worried about the wood work possibly use Murphy’s Oil Soap. Good Luck!

I’ve done everything. Downloaded Spyware Doctor, Malwarebyte, Six types of Rkill, and Quad Registry Cleaner. I searched all over google and youtube. I followed http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-security-suite… Nothing! I try to use rkill before Security Suite had time to open but my Computer background freezes then the attack happens. I try clicking all the rkills at the same time… Still Nothing. Try using Spyware Doctor and Malwarebyte while the virus was attacking… Still blocked. I’m using safe mode now,,, Only way I can connect to the internet without firefox freezing and IE from Saying I don’t have a connection.
Thinking of reformatting my computer if this goes on any longer. Which means redownloading updates and patches for my games… So please, can someone help or at least give out some useful advice that I haven’t heard?

I also got attacked by a similar virus before called Anti-Malware Doctor. RKill and Malwarebyte finished it off quick… But Security Suite is a pain to get rid of since it blocks all the rkills.

By the way, I already downloaded WiNlOgOn and uSeRiNiT… Those are the extra two rkills.
Yes, I have tried using Malwarebyte, Spyware Doctor, and TDSSkiller in safemode.

Malwarebyte got some other trogans and stuff before Security Suite got power. So did Spyware Doctor. But, none got rid of Security Suite. Now they say nothing in my computer. I ran TDSSkiller in safe mode but it didn’t find anything either…

I’m downloading exeHelper.com and exeHelper.scr now. I’m going to try to use rkill and keep the message saying it’s infected.
Thanks Bill M!

After going Fist of the North Star on my mouse. (Google it if you don’t understand what I mean) I rkill worked and I got Spyware docotor working! It found viruses and Trojans. So when it finishes, I should be clear. Gonna open up Megabyte too, just to be sure.

(Spyware Doctor is the full version, so it can get rid of the viruses)
Hrm, seems like Spyware Doctor didn’t get rid of it when I restarted… Maybe if I run all my anti-virus programs… I don’t know, I’ll keep trying.

If you run into those infections warnings that close Rkill, the trick is to leave the warning on the screen and then run Rkill again. By not closing the warning, this typically will allow you to bypass the malware trying to protect itself so that rkill can terminate Security Suite . So, please try running Rkill until the malware is no longer running. You will then be able to proceed with the rest of the guide. If you continue having problems running rkill.com, you can download iExplore.exe or eXplorer.exe, which are renamed copies of rkill.com, and try them instead.

I suppose you did the above exactly as describe. If it doesn’t work then there’s nothing more you can do but to do a factory reset or a clean installation of everything (OS and applications).

By the way, you said that you’ve been hit by a similar fake AV before. This means you have not adopted any significant measures to protect your system. If you had at least the free Microsoft Security Essentials and the full version of Malwarebytes (not free), you would not be experiencing this.

Oh well, some people learn the hard way and some people learn the harder way.

Anyone have any idea, its deep in side the registry. NOt sure how to go witht this one…

you can try to change the name of the program before insdtalling/runing it.
but many of these new viruses are learning viruses. my father got one and as i was trying to track it down, it changed folder options so i couldn’t view hidden files/directories, couldn’t use task manager and couldn’t use safe mode.
also, the fact that it’s solid state is of no relevance here….

A virus called XP smart security attacked my computer. I did all the steps listed on this website http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-smart-security except for the last one that said delete my system 32 file.I’m nervous about deleting that since I heard it’s a very important component for a computer. Anyway, I also downloaded and ran in safemode Malewarebytes,Wondershare Registry Optimizer, Spybot-search and destroy, AVG 9.0 Anti-virus plus firewall, and Auslogics Registry Cleaner. The problem is even though I know the virus is gone it has left a lot of problems in its wake even with all the computer helping stuff I downloaded.

First I can no longer do anything under my username. It is the name I was under when the virus attacked. If I try to open the internet or go to control panel these two things will pop up. A box saying Open with comes up and then proceeds to list programs. That box shouldn’t be coming up in the first place,and even when I go along with it still no internet. For the control panel this message comes up C:/windows/system32/rundll32.exe/application not found.

Strangely this doesn’t happen in my other administrator user-names. Just the one that I was on when the virus came. However, there are some problems under the username I’m now under as well. Firefox will crash if I go to certain sites or I will get redirected. Also I can go to safe mode, but I can no longer do anything while there. I have a strong feeling this virus rewrote some things in my registry, and even with the registry cleaners I used I’m still having problems. What am I doing wrong?

Should I I go on ahead and do the last step in the link I provided which is deleting the system 32 file? That does seem like where the problems are coming from since all the errors I keep getting have that file name in it. If not what can I do? Everything is wrong or won’t work at all under my original user-name. Even system restore. My other user-names aren’t all that better. What can I do to get my computer fully back in good health. Thanks

Do you happen to have your windows disk or a recovery disc? If so insert it and select repair. If not and you don’t have a backup and system restore won’t work then I’m afraid your most likely screwed.

this window popped up calling itself the security removal.. wouldnt let me execute any of my programs unless i purchased it for 49.99 then used a bank of america captcha type deal to get my social.. when the charge of "verisign" came to 1059.00 I pushed cancel and it, the hoax pushed the transaction through.. it was listed on my statement as creativity-soft from Moscow.. i had to cancel my card.. reset my online banking info and file a claim.. why didnt macafee or defender find this? when i ran my superantispyware free addition it caught all of the hoax..

Last.. I have ATF, Ccleaner, Mcafee, Windows Defender that came with Win 7.. I need a FREE registry cleaner. How often should I defrag my system and last.. in my McAfee Security Center, when i go to the Manage Nework tab I have My computer with my name, then on the top i have what appears to be my wirless or my modem, connected to that is the internet. Directly below my router icon are 9 other computers networked with the ip address as; 192.168.2.4, 192.168.2.6,192.168.2.9, 192.168.2.8,192.168.2.9, 192.168.2.10, 192.168.2.11, PCUSER1-PC (which could be my desktop downstairs), STEVEN-PC AND VISTA. They all have little computer screen icons with ? marks which i know men they are not protected by McAfee. My router is not secured so are other people getting in to my system?

I know there is a lot here but I would really appreciate anyone that can give me some assistance. Thank you so much!

Ok, Mcafee and windows defender are very bad security programs. Get a very good program such as Nod32 or free ones — Avira AntiVir and Malware Bytes Anti Malware. Sorry to hear you got scammed.

I got some spyware/malware/virus thing on my laptop. I did the steps on malwarehelp.org for removing ave.exe files which led me through an update to the registry, removal of the malware, and clean up of the system. I had to do it twice and the 3rd scan came back clean. Now I have 2 residual issues. 1 is that if I do a search say on Yahoo, when I click a link on the results it will take me somewhere else, like a random shopping page or something. But if I type in the exact URL in the browser, then its fine. The 2nd issue is that sometimes a new browser window will open on its on, no rhyme or reason. It seems to be worse in IE8 than Firefox but I’m still scared

If all else fails I guess I can run my restore disk but I hate to. Ideas??

Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware should be able to get rid of most Malware, it has always helped for me when i needed to get rid of Malware.

http://fileforum.betanews.com/download/Malwarebytes-AntiMalware/1186760019/1

You could also try SUPERAntiSpyware which might be able to get rid of it if Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware fails to do so.

http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfile.html?productid=SUPERANTISPYWAREFREE

Both are these programs are free to download and use. They are also 100% safe and easy to use.

I have a compaq presario v2000, with 512 mb of ram and a 1.8 ghz AMD sempron processor, with microsoft xp home edition. I had installed norton antivirus 2002 nearly a year ago from a CD my dad had, and it was fine, until I ram a free virus scan on the internet and found out that I had 5 viruses on my computer. I then installed avast antivirus, and it installed OK, but I had not uninstalled norton beforehand. I then read that I had to uninstall norton first, so I uninstalled norton, deleted all of it’s program files, ran the norton removal tool, and edited my registry so it is clean of files with the name "norton" in them. I restarted my computer after doing all of that. I looked all over the internet on ways to remove norton, and I tried all of them. Then, assuming norton was removed from my system, I installed avast again. I ran a boot-time scan, but then when my computer was nearly finished booting, avast gave me a message telling me that norton antivirus was still running
Avast told me that norton antivirus was still running and that it was incompatible. I have now registered avast, and it tells me that 3 our of 4 scanners are running. These scanners are: internet mail, outlook/exchange, network shield, and web shield. I am missing 3 of the scanners that should be running. I don’t know if my system is protected or not, and I have searched far and wide in my computer for anything titled "norton" and so far I haven’t found anything. But still avast keeps telling me that norton is running, and as a result, avast cannot sucessfully run. I really need help on this.

PLEASE DON’T ANSWER UNTIL YOU HAVE READ MY ENTIRE STORY, OTHERWISE YOU WILL TELL ME TO TRY SOMETHING i HAVE ALREADY TRIED.

thanks for your help, I really need it now.

Typically Norton has installed several other programs. From your description, it appears that you missed the major key term:

Symantec.

Uninstall any symantec software, especially LiveUpdate.
Avast is good, but what I’ve done in similar circumstances is to install AVG antivirus, and then uninstall any others, as it can run on top of others. http://free.grisoft.com

Good luck!

-Additional answer after comments—–

There may be another answer for your woes, but I hate to be the bearer of bad news. From the sound of it, you might have a bug that is emulating Norton behavior, which can interfere with other AV suites. If you have uninstalled Norton completely, there is no reason why you should be getting the errors that you are getting. I’ve had NAV2002 installed/uninstalled so many times from 2002-2006 that I lost count, but I never ran into your current problem

A virus could very well be the source of your problems now. If that is the case, I would try to do a scan at bootup with an emergency boot disk. You may have to go to another PC to create it, but almost any AV suite has the ability to make this disk, which can eradicate any known virus from the safety of a bootable CD, which will override your Xp installation.

I hope that’s not the case, but that would be my last attempt before a complete rebuild of your system. The good news is that if you haven’t performed a completely new install of XP in the last year or two, then you are overdue for it anyway. It really gives you a performance boost.

Some how the xpantispyware2009 virus got into my computer. It is blocking me from opening most of my spyware-getter-rid ofs, including hijack this. I deleted some of its .DLL files, but it is still blocking hijack this, and any removal tools links will not open online, it just goes to a blank page so I think it is blocking that too. HELP Avast is running, and isnt detecting anything yet, and F8 is not working on my laptop to open it and try and run it in safe mode. I dont even see an F8 option, it says F2 and F12 and neither of those say anything about safe mode. I deleted all registry keys with CC cleaner, HELP!!!!!!! What can I do? Can i delete it manually? It wont delete it in control panel, and the .exe files are not showing in cmd prompt. My Aol Instant messanger is AdelinaBamarre to anyone that can help too, if willing to walk me through this.

ok

only one way to get rid of these things.

and thank goodness its the easyest.

go buy the windows operating sysem or if you still have the CD then reinstall XP.

do this by putting the CD in and restarting your comp …then make sure u delete ur petition and make a new one.

or if u want to try and battle it download:

SUPER ANTISPYWARE

and

AVAST home edition.

and maybe AVG..

but those 2 work great togeather.

make sure u TAKE YOUR INTERNET OFF!!!! VIRUES SPREAD USING THE INTERNET ON UR COMPUTER! PULL THE PLUG!

then get ur new anti stuff and restart computer while pushing F8 (savemode)

or superantispyware has a boot save thing and u can reach that by going to start- all programs- super anti spyware- and boot safe…

good luck

my advice is to reinstall xp or vista..

please email me if u want step by step. or if u have AIM that would be better to communicate…just do it on anothe computer.
