I have a desk top computer that I need to get rid of. It has some glitches I cant fix. I have tried AVG malware, virus removal, registry cleaner etc, etc. Uninstalled AVG, Installed norton 360 still didnt fix problems. Computer locks up when accessing email or in any activity. Computer automatically shuts itself down, powers off in the middle of a task?? Now I cant even get it to log onto internet. I am tired of messing with it. I replaced it with two laptops. I would like to sale or trade it for a printer/copier/scanner. Dont know if it is of any value in its condition except that the monitior, speakers and keyboard may be worth something? before i do anything with it I want all my information deleted from it. Word documents, favorites settings, autofill, address lists etc. How do I wipe it clean?? It is a 2002 gateway desktop, intel pentium, windows XP pro.
Easy way is format and reload the OS, if you have the recovery CD’s from the manufacturer, then you can boot thru the cd and redo the OS.
Hope this helps.

Do a clean install which is like starting with a new computer again.
After you complete the clean install, make sure you DELETE the windows.old file left in your hard drive. This is very important as it is a backup of your old system.

It sounds as if you have picked up a virus that the anti-virus scanner will not find. What you need to do is reformat your hard drive in order to wipe all data from the system. If you have a copy of your windows OS you can insert the disk into the drive and it will let you wipe your drive clean.

the best thing to do would be pull out and keep or destroy the hard drive, that is the only way to be 100% certain your old data won’t turn up somewhere else, whoever you sell or trade it too can get a replacement hard drive for $50 or less

The best way would be to remove the hard disk and dispose it off separately. That way you can be assured that nothing is left behind.

.What you need is a file deletion programme, in essence all this does is write a random sequence of 1s and 0s to the disc completely eradicating all files. Go to this link where you can get free downloads and more information. . http://www.thefreecountry.com/security/
