Lenovo slow computer question. To add RAM or not to add RAM? Please help!?

OK, i have a Lenovo PC at work, I have PLENTY of freespace on my drive, but my computer is EXTREMELY sluggish when I am trying to do tasks in quickbooks, outlook, internet explorer, my server, MS products etc. I work in a busy office and I need to have most of these programs open and running all day. Its gotten to where I can’t do two things at once anymore without it freezing or taking forever. I am using Windows Vista. I have done a registry clean up, cleaned up any programs or files i dont need, run spyware removal tools, defragged etc etc. Will adding additional RAM help me? I can’t take it anymore its driving me nuts!!!! And if so, would a 1GB upgrade be sufficient or should i opt for 2GB?

I used to have Mozilla, I LOVED it but for work purposes its not compatible with some government websistes, so I have to have IE anyway. :-/

if you need to have them all open, definitely get more RAM. also increase the size of your paging file (virtual ram). Internet Explorer is probably the one hugging all of the memory. You may want to try another browser.

ofcourse 2 Gb is better than 1 GB

Sure it will help but it won’t solve your problem.
The best thing you can do is reinstall your system, that does wonders, especially if you haven’t done that for over a year!

Adding more RAM usually helps, it depends on how much you currently have. If you’re running on 512MB, you really need to upgrade. If you’re running on 1GB, you should get by, but will notice a change if you up it an extra 1GB, totaling 2GB. Vista is already programmed to automatically run the disk defrag weekly (check the Task Scheduler: Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools). You can try uninstalling unnecessary programs that run in the background like Google Desktop and others that usually come pre-installed in new computers.
You can also check your registry startup items and google the files to see what they are and what they do.
Be careful when messing with the registry because you can accidentally delete something and prevent your PC from running properly.
Click "Start" and on the search field or in Run, type "regedit" and press Enter. Check these keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Again, make sure you know what you are deleting before you do so. To your surprise you may find some type of EXE file that is unknown which could be a virus or spyware or trojan horse. I suggest you run Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and also AVG (if you don’t already have an antivirus program).

If you are doing multi tasking in Vista then the more RAM the better.

Turning of the Aero functions, transparency, etc. may speed it up a bit, but I would try to get at least a total of 3 GB of RAM in there.

You need 2GB for a busy world and add on with an extra one if your computer is running slow. You need to be eliminating extra files that are needed to save. Duplicate files are taking much of your space. Windows Vista is fine for home use but upgrade to a Windows 7 and think about the next software system to help you in your busy world. Clean up as much as you can and work to improvement. Your sanity is worth it!…(Extra note is if you like Vista adding it to 4GB only gives it 3GB in acutality because the software hoards some of the memory to run some of the software that is present. Thought you would like to know)
