As you began using your PC to install and remove software programs, this causes changes in your windows registry. If you want to get a clean windows registry, you will need to repair any registry errors that may have occurred over time.
The windows registry can be a scary place. Most casual computer users don’t venture near the windows registry. If you want to see what your registry looks like, you can access it with the following command.
Click on your windows Start button. Then select the ‘Run’ command. In the dialog box that appears, you’ll see a space to type a command into. The command you’ll type is regedit in lowercase.
Then click the OK button. This action will bring up the Registry Editor. Now I don’t want you to make any changes at all. Just take a look and you’ll notice all the files it takes to make your PC run all the various software programs you use on a daily basis.
If you expanded the folders, you’ll notice there are literally thousands and files. And this is why it’s sometimes tedious to try to repair your windows registry yourself.
Before you do anything, make sure you exit the windows registry editor. Do this by either clicking the tiny red X at the right of the window. Alternatively, you can use the menu by clicking on File and exit. This will not cause any changes to be made to your PC.
Now that you know where you registry lives and how important it is to have a clean windows registry, you may decide that you don’t want to mess with it on your own. Have no fear…help is near. There are several registry editors on the web that you can download right a way. These will scan your registry for editors and then with only one click, will give you a clean windows registry.
Once your windows registry has been cleaned, you’ll notice the sluggishness gone and your PC feels just like it did the day you took it out of the box. And, stay clean..and that goes for your PC as well.

Most of the performance claims made by companies that sell registry cleaners are pure fantasy. Removing the wrong key can leave you with a computer that will not run or a program that will not work. Using Windows Live OneCare "full scan" is probably the safest and good enough for all users.

Registry Cleaners
Myth – "Registry Cleaners improve performance."
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/XPMyths.html
Reality – "A few hundred kilobytes of unused keys and values causes no noticeable performance impact on system operation. Even if the registry was massively bloated there would be little impact on the performance of anything other than exhaustive searches."
Notes – "Registry Cleaners can fix problems associated with traces of applications left behind due to incomplete uninstalls. So it seems that Registry junk is a Windows fact of life and that Registry cleaners will continue to have a place in the anal-sysadmin’s tool chest."
