Registry repair programs – Can you give me the real story – are they necessary?

A computer tech told me they do more harm than good. I’ve been using RegCure, but I just reformatted my HD and have not reloaded it.
Well, if you have a good registry repair program, I don’t see why it would harm your computer. Many viruses/trojans and other malicious programs can write themselves into your registry or edit registry values, which can cause your computer to operate poorly.
If you are using a free, basic registry repair program, it may not "fix" things properly, and that may be where the harm could come – although I see those problems as being very rare and minor.
I’ve never used a registry repairer myself (mainly because I haven’t needed it) but I’d recommend making sure the program you have is from a trusted developer.
