I have a Power Point presentation about Windows tomorrow and so can somebody explain how Windows uses registry in a simple way?

There is nothing simple about the registry no matter whom you ask. No single person understands the whole thing, and a lot of people kill their computers by trying to "clean" the registry – which is about like drying the ocean with a tea towel.

Basically the registry is a database of computer settings. Anything more clouds the issue.
