how can I browse the windows registry from a separate windows installation?

Same computer. The drive with the windows registry I need to browse will no longer boot.

You need to navigate into the System32 folder of that drive/partition

once in the System32 Folder go into the Config Folder you should see a bunch of files. this is the registry hive go into Start-Run and type Regedit like you normally would. Go to File Tab and select Load Hive, Navigate to that folder you were in and select the Software file and name your hive Temp or something, you can now access the hive file from the other drive… When your done make sure to select the "Temp" hive you loaded and go to File and Unload it!

The Software file is only a portion of the actual full registry but you get the idea!

  2. There’s no "registry" unless the computer is booted from that installation. The registry is built from a few different files, depending on the version of Windows (more than 1 file in any given version). You’ll have to research which files you need for the version you have, then learn to read them manually.
