i want to remove old programs from my windows registry that i no longer use

Well… You should use a registry cleaner.

A good paid program is by UNIBLUE "registry booster"
But it works well only with the paid version – the free one doesn’t fix everything.

A free one is: "CCLEANER"
Just go to download.com and search CCLEANER….
It cleans old files, recycle bin etc…
Then the second option is Registry Cleaner.
Use this utility and search, then fix.

Before you fix, CCleaner will ask if you want to save a back-up file.
this file will restore the deleted registries [that you do not need anymore] – if you find that your system needs it for whatever reason.

this is safer than you going into the windows registry and cleaning manually. … .. also, you may miss some uneccesary entries when doing manually.

Hope this helps!

  2. You can remove programs from the list in "Add or Remove Programs" in Control Panel or using each program’s uninstall option in its program group in the start menu. The registry will automatically be updated so you don’t need to worry about it.

If the programs leave some stuff behind in the registry, it doesn’t hurt to leave it and may hurt if you try to make changes. There are registry cleaners that do this like EasyCleaner (pretty safe) and CCleaner (more aggressive). I’ve read a few experts’ opinions that this doesn’t really do much and isn’t really necessary. I’d say read a little about it and decide for yourself.

  3. Working with the registry is risky business.

Using registry cleaners can potentially have serious negative consequenses that don’t have to be immediately visible, wich makes it even more dangerous. so when u clean the registry everything may seem ok untill u encounter some problem a while afterwards that might have been caused by this cleaning. Also cleaning the registry has very little impact on ur system-performance.

More safe are registry defragmenters that don’t delete stuff but just rearrange the data and erase empty gaps in the registry.

Generally if u want to optimize the registry just defragment it and maybe use a good carefull cleaner that gives good discriptions of what would be deleted and why and lets u manually select the items.

When u work with the registry u should have a backup either in the form of a system-restore point or some other backup.

If u want to avoid a messy register just don’t install to much junk. If u are somebody that likes to try out a lot of stuff and installs a lot of shareware-programs u should try this: Create a multi-boot system with boot-it ng. Now install 1 os-installation that u wil use as a neat template and make a backup-image of it (can all be done with boot-it ng). Now make a copy of this os that u use to try out stuff. U would get a bootmenu looking something like this:
choice 1: my neat operating system
    choice 2: testing
Now u can install software and when there’s something u like u install it in the neat os. When u make sure u keep a backup-image of a freshly installed neat os, u can always put that back when something goes wrong. Also a great method against viruses.

P.S. well-written software wil remove itself from the registry when u uninstall it.
