Recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting by britec.co.uk
When you try to start or restart your Windows XP-based computer, you may receive one of the following error messages:
Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE
Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate
System error: Lsass.exe
What your need is UBCD4WIN you can get that program here
http://www.ubcd4win.com/downloads.htm
Your also need files from System Volume Information folder, if you don’t have any files in System Volume Information folder, you can use files from the repair folder.

I am currently …
I am currently using a Vista. Microsoft always fails.
You should go with a Macintosh.

UBCD$WIN has a tool …
UBCD$WIN has a tool called registry restore wizard under registry tools that does this for you without having to manually do what you just did.
@slaintesalud you …
@slaintesalud you can use Puppy Linux to recover pictures or try UBCD, theres loads of ways, clonezilla, driveimage xml all are free. Sorry dont have video of using adapter to recover lost photos.
I remember those …
I remember those points. You made it very clear those two things were needed. Unfortunately, I took “have the cd already” to mean the upcd4win built CD. That was my mistake. And since they require the Windows XP cd to build a CD, it goes back to my original problem. I suppose there isn’t a solution in regards to using a CD. I’ll ask this: Do you have a video showing how to use an adapter to pull information from the bad hardrive onto the new one? I really just want to recover lost pictures.
@slaintesalud well …
@slaintesalud well in my video i did say that you going to need two things. 1. have the cd already 2 . restore points. But instead of this tit for tat nonsense, lets try think of a way to fix your problem? Solution: you might be able to use puppy linux bootable cd and do it that way? dont need windows for that.
Thanks for your …
Thanks for your honesty. The computer did not come with an XP cd since it was donated, hence the lack of one. Also, TBH, your video says that you were showing how to overcome this problem if you didn’t have the CD. I assumed that meant it was for the many people who are in my situation. Having said that, would it be possible for my previous question to be answered? I hope that there is a solution, since snark didn’t help.
@slaintesalud Well …
@slaintesalud Well TBH most people like yourself get in this state because you dont prepare for the worst. now that the worst has happened and you was not prepared, it makes it alot harder for you to fix.
I have the same …
I have the same exact problem on my computer, and I was excited about finding your solution. However, I went to the ubcd4win website and in the instruction on building the CD, it says that you must have a Windows XP cd with Service Pack in order to build the bootCD. Is that true? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose, since I would be able to fix it on my own if I had a the Windows XP CD to begin with? Please help.
great video. it …
great video. it worked for me. One thing to add i had this problem and i followed your steps, but i had another hd and i just slaved the one with the corrupt error and followed your instructions and waallaa it worked. So actually you dont need any software if you have another working hd. Just slave the corrupt one follow his steps.
I am both mentally …
I am both mentally handicapped and very very stupid. so I said them round the wrong way. is that the best you can do to try and upset me lol
“I’ll put the …
“I’ll put the description in the link.”
I’ve been watching a couple videos of yours, and you strike me as either mentally handicapped or just very very stupid. Can you please clarify for us? At least then we know if we need to feel sorry or not.
Yea, but regardless …
Yea, but regardless, the next time I need it, it doesn’t work. They’re infected again. Whatever malware I find has also ruined my restore points. I’m looking for a replacement that maybe has encrypted restore points or something that will prevent this from happening.
once I clean …
once I clean malware, I always turn off system restore and turn it back on this deletes all restore point and then I make new clean restore point.
The problem for me …
The problem for me is that every time I need system restore it never works. Everytime I find malware it has always infected system restore points. I always get “sorry can’t restore to the selected restore point” “No changes have been made to your computer”
great video, thanks …
