Windows Explorer has stopped working – how to fix it!

Apr 14, 2010
by admin in windows registry with 25 Comments

A common problem it seems. This tutorial aims at helping those who have suffered from this. What with people likely to receive new computers and/or Windows 7 for Christmas it will be an issue that many will need help on. Hope this helps.

- Now i’ve heard conflicting reports about this from various people. If you suffer from this you should at least attempt the aforementioned techniques.

-Failing this and if the problem persists for you, I would advise AGAINST tampering with your windows registry. I have heard people recommend this as some say it is a Windows error (which it may be in all likelihood), but if this is the case you should not under any circumstances alter your windows registry before any fix has been officially released by Microsoft. The particlar entry I advise against altering is:

regedit/HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/SQMClient/Windows/Disabledsessions

-Alternatively you can try disabling the Customer Experience Improvement Program by doing the following:

In search bar type gpedit.msc / Administrative Templates / System / Internet Communication Management / Internet Communication settings.

Right click and choose to ‘enable’ as it should at present be ‘Not Configured’.

-Another thing it may well be an AMD driver related issue or even Internet Explorer issue (which was one of the culprits of the ntdll.dll error)

Anyhow hope this helps and that people with the problem get it sorted.

Thanks to my mate BRODIE for allowing me to use his awesome tracks and the Crew!

Dont forget to rate and subscribe, always glad to help!

N.B./ Just some notes:
1/ what I meant by sfc /scannow validating Windows was that it basically validated protected system files and .dlls.
2/ This guide is in no particular order please be aware of this – it was just the order I so happened to choose.

    @allredhead I got same problem when opening video files and then “Windows Explorer has stopped working” “Windows explorer is restarting” appeared. And now, I upgraded my Vista to Windows 7..same problem occured.. I fixed it now by disabling or removing ffdshow of vistacodecpack using Autoruns by Microsoft under Codec Tab. Or try to uninstall it.. After uninstalling VistaCodecPack..I installed 7CodecPack..and it works now..

    @allredhead Hi mate …
    @allredhead Hi mate.
    I remember reading about this type of issue regarding videos a while back and seems to revolve around a problem with your codecs or dllhost.
    Best way is to update them – DivX or Nero
    or disabling certain things.
    (As in my world of warcraft video) got to Control Panel, System and on the left look for ‘Advanced System Settings’.
    In ‘Advanced’ tab go to ‘Settings’ and ‘Data Execution Prevention’ tab and make sure the bottom one is selected…

When i try to upload the videos to youtube that are in the videos folder it makes the browser crash. Can you please give me some idea of what to do? BTW i have Windows 7. Thank You.

    Hey I think it …
    Hey I think it might have be something to do with Internet Explorer again and Java (though in truth could be any number of things). You may want to try disabling some addons, updating all your drivers or maybe even reinstalling – a program like Software Informer might come in handy to let you know if you need updates for programs. May even be your anti virus or Windows Defender – lots of potential causes :/

    Hey didn’t these …
    Hey didn’t these work for you? I heard this trick might work as mentioned in the side bar:

    In search bar type gpedit.msc then go to – Administrative Templates / System / Internet Communication Management / Internet Communication settings.
    Go to ‘turn off windows customer experience program’, right click it and choose ‘enable’ – so you want to enable it to be turned off.

    Good luck
